Canada geese: From near extinction to urban nuissance
Canada Geese, with their striking black necks and white chinstraps, are now a common sight across North America. However, this wasn't always the case. In the early 20th century, overhunting and habitat loss had driven them to near extinction. Conservation efforts, including the Migratory Birds Convention Act of 1916 and reintroduction programs in the 1960s, helped revive their populations. Today, there are an estimated 4 to 5 million Canada Geese in North America, with over 400,000 breeding in Ontario alone.
A quick look back at Canada’s story
July 1 marks the birth of our country as a unified nation.
On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act (now called the Constitution Act) came into effect, joining the colonies of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into a single country: the Dominion of Canada. This laid the foundation for the nation we know today.
Back then, the holiday was known as Dominion Day, and it wasn't until 1982 – when Canada gained full control of its Constitution and officially cut legal ties to the British Parliament – that it was renamed Canada Day.
Over the years, Canada Day has grown into more than just a celebration of Confederation. It’s become a time to reflect on our shared values, acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous Peoples and newcomers alike, and celebrate the cultures and communities that make Canada so vibrant and unique.
While fireworks, barbecues, and parades are part of the fun, Canada Day is also an opportunity to look at where we've been—and where we're going together.
Happy Canada Day
Canada Day invites us to pause, reflect, and take pride in the shared history and evolving story of this country. However you choose to mark the occasion, we hope it’s meaningful, memorable, and filled with a sense of connection—to your community, to the land, and to the values we continue to shape together.
