Thefts of catalytic converters on the rise

Police say the attraction is precious metals contained in the converters

Catalytic converters are a hot ticket for theft.

Bracebridge OPP say within two days officers responded to separate incidents in which catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles in Gravenhurst. One was at a local business and the other from a transportation company, for a total value of about $15,000.

The theft of catalytic converters appears to be on the rise across the province, say police, with the increased value of precious metals contained within the converters.

Bracebridge OPP would like to remind vehicle owners of the following safety tips:

  • Keep vehicles in a location that has proper lighting
  • Install video surveillance if possible
  • Use products that are designed to deter catalytic converter theft. For example, a wire cage can be installed around the converter, and welded and bolted to the underside of the vehicle.
