City Hall COVID-19 compliance line received over a hundred calls in a week capped by a sunny Sunday in Barrie

Two fines handed out to pair accused of going into a closed park

The sun was shining in Barrie on Sunday, and that got people out of doors. It also got some into trouble.

The City of Barrie says two people were fined by by-law officers over the weekend after entering one of the closed-off parks in the city. Two charges laid out of a total of 111 calls to the city’s COVID-19 compliance line from April 27th to May 3rd.

Barrie City Hall reports it received sixty-six complaints of people gathering over the week, along with 17 of people using park equipment. Twelve complaints were filed about people not maintaining a safe distance of two metres, while 16 calls came in regarding businesses thought to be violating health and safety guidelines.

Meanwhile, bylaw officers on routine patrol had 633 COVID-19 compliance-related interactions over the weekend. Many of the violations had to do with dogs off leashes or kids playing on closed equipment.

In all but the two cases, everyone ended up either not being in violation of guidelines after all, or chose to abide instead of receiving a fine.
