City Increasing Fares to Barrie Transit

Adult Single-Ride Fare Increasing By a Quarter, Monthly Passes By A Buck

A ticket to ride will cost you a quarter extra by this Fall.

The City has given initial approval to a fare increase for Barrie Transit buses. An adult pass would cost $3.25 November 1st, with similar fee increases for multi-ride cards and passes.

The City is planning to do away with the six-ride card, sticking with the existing 10-ride ticket only. The price will go up by about fifteen cents per ride, while a monthly adult pass will rise by a dollar. Barrie Transit will be free to seniors for the month of June, while children up to 12 years of age will be able to ride for free year-round. Right now, the fare structure allows kids 0-6 a free ride, while those up to 12 pay a discounted rate. Transfers would be good for 75 minutes instead of the current 60 minutes.

A recent study out of McGill University indicates ridership goes down by about two per cent following a ten per cent increase in fares. Keeping this in mind, city staff say the additional revenue generated by these fare increases will equal $107,050 in the first year alone.
