The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 35-year-old Barrie man on Saturday afternoon.
In a news release, the SIU said that around 12:10 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2023, a woman fled from a vehicle in the east end of Barrie and contacted police. The vehicle left the scene.
Police were able to track the vehicle of interest. At approximately 2:30 p.m., in the area of Kempfenfelt Drive and Nelson Square, officers made visual and verbal contact with the man in the vehicle.
The SUI said officers initiated brief negotiations with the man but shortly after, the man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
The civilian agency is required to investigate situations involving police and civilians that result in serious injury, sexual assault or death.
