Doug Shipley will be trading his municipal political hat for a federal one. The Conservative and Ward 3 Barrie city councillor won the riding of Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte, winning nearly 39 per cent of the vote.
Shipley says he will be resigning his city council seat on Tuesday. “I was really surprised how many people knew me outside of Barrie, in Springwater and Oro-Medonte. They know my work ethic and they were familiar with my abilities, and I was quite humbled to know I was getting a lot of positive reaction from people throughout the riding.”
Shipley says he will be going to Ottawa to tackle issues he heard from people at the door while campaigning.
“One thing is affordability. People are just finding it tough to make ends meet. The second thing is climate change. And our national debt. Those are three things that he heard over and over and will be forefront in his mind.”
Shipley said he will hold the Liberals feet to the fire to keep their promise to bring back the Lake Simcoe Clean-up Fund.
As for the future of Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, Shipley said he was focused right now on working for the riding.
