Dunlop St. Flooding a Symptom Of Undersized Culverts

Work Underway To Upsize Where Needed

Dunlop Street was closed for a time today, after some floodwaters made the route impassable at High Street.

“But wait” you’re saying, “it didn’t rain THAT hard”, and you’re right, but unfortunately, the rain had nowhere to go.

The City of Barrie says the flooding this morning was a direct result of undersized channels and culverts. That said, work is already underway to upsize the culverts in that area, or eliminate them altogether if possible, by creating natural channels there instead. These upsized or natural options are said to be better able to handle major storm events.

The Kidd’s Creek Master Drainage Plan calls for construction to begin by the spring of next year.
