Dunlop Street to fully reopen by noon Wednesday, after over a year of reconstruction

We Dig Downtown project, started in August 2019, ending at noon Wednesday

Barrie’s downtown construction is just hours from completion.

Barrie City Hall says the Dunlop Street construction project will officially come to an end on Wednesday as the final under-construction intersections reopen. The Five Points and Toronto Street intersections are expected to fully reopen as of 12 p.m., meaning a new and improved 1.5km stretch of Dunlop Street.

The We Dig Downtown project began in August of 2019 and cost some $15.7 million to complete. The project replaced and repaired much of the underground infrastructure and saw the streetscape receive a complete makeover. The street now has wider and more accessible sidewalks, with new streetlights, planters, trees, benches, bike racks, and more.

While there is some cleanup work expected in the spring of 2021, the city says it should not cause any major disruptions or require any full road closures.
