Eternals becomes Marvel's lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes

The only film in the franchise to not receive a "rotton" rating
Eternals Rotten

You would think Marvel would want to come out of the pandemic gate swinging, but Eternals has become its lowest-rated movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes.

After debuting at a 75% fresh rating (which is normal), Eternals slowly fell all the way to a rotten rating and is currently sitting at 54%.

Rotten Tomatoes uses a very black and white rating system where critical reviews are forced to choose if a movie is either "rotten" or "fresh". No individual per cent ratings or points out of ten. The site then compiles all those reviews and gives you a per cent of critics who found the movie fresh.

If a movie sits above 60%, it's fresh and if it sits below, it's rotten. There is also one more rating a movie can earn which is "certified fresh". This means a movie has a 70% rating or higher with at least 80 reviews (5 of which are from top critics).

There have only been two movies in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe that have not achieved the "certified fresh" status (Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk) and both of those films still managed to hang on to at least a "fresh" status by staying above that 60% threshold.

With the Eternals sitting at 54% from over 150 reviews, it is officially the worst reviews MCU film to date.

Critics site its lack of action spectacle, bloated story, and the overstuffed cast of characters as their main points of criticism.

The film was also directed by Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao, but it seems even she couldn't save it from Marvel's ever-growing need to expand the universe with bankable characters.
