Fire danger rating in most of Simcoe Muskoka is moderate to high

Grass fire in Tiny Township was accidentally sparked by a man who had a fire in a barrel

Careful if you are doing any outdoor burning. Conditions are dry and it doesn’t take much to spark a brush fire.

Proof of that was a grass fire on Tiny Beaches Road Friday afternoon, which began when a resident had a fire burning in a barrel and a gust of wind blew sparks on to the grass.

The man tried to put the fire out with a hose but it spread fast.

More than two dozen fire crews from Tiny Township were needed to bring the blaze under control.

Fire crews in Huntsville and Lake of Bays report they have responded to several brush fires over the last few days.

The fire danger rating in Simcoe Muskoka, as well as the cities of Barrie and Orillia, ranges from moderate to high, with a ban in place in New Tecumseth.

If you are going to be doing any outdoor burning, contact your local municipality to make sure you know what is and isn’t allowed.
