First case of South African COVID-19 variant identified in Ontario

Case involves resident from Peel with no prior travel history

Ontario has reported its first case of the South African COVID-19 variant.

Dr. David Williams, the provincial medical officer of health, said at a media briefing Monday afternoon the case involves a resident from Peel Region who has no recent travel history or contact with someone who has travelled. Health authorities are investigating how the individual was infected.

The variant is more contagious than other mutations of the virus, but health authorities don’t know if it causes more severe illness.

The South African variant has already been detected in western Canada.
