Five people from Barrie among the dozen new cases of COVID-19 within Simcoe Muskoka

A dozen new cases of COVID-19 have been reported by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Thursday.

Five people from Barrie are among the new batch of cases, along with three from Bradford-West Gwillimbury. A workplace-related case is being reported in New Tecumseth as the region addresses outbreaks among farmworkers.

The SMDHU is also reporting two cases of COVID-19 in Muskoka Lakes, and one in Innisfil.

According to the health unit’s Thursday update, three more people recovered from the virus, and there were no new hospitalizations or deaths reported.

Meanwhile, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre has had a need to expand the operating hours of its drive-thru COVID-19 testing centre due to increased demand recently.

While testing rates are increasing across the region, the percent positivity rate in Simcoe Muskoka is 0.6 percent, compared to the provincial percent positivity rate of 0.8 percent. A low percent positivity rate indicates the outbreak is under control, given more testing is finding a smaller and smaller proportion of positives.
