The State of Florida has banned alcohol consumption at its bars as health officials confirmed nearly 9,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.

The 8,942 new cases are almost double the previous record of 5,500, set this past Wednesday.

Department of Health officials attributes the spike to Florida’s bar scene, which was allowed to reopen earlier this month.

Governor Ron DeSantis has been urging residents to wear masks and avoid large gatherings.

Florida currently allows gatherings of up to 50 private citizens.

Officially, COVID-19 has killed at least 122,481 people and infected more than 2.4 million in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University.
