Ford should cancel Holland Marsh Highway – Green Party

"Simply put, it’s a bad idea"

Provincial Green Party leader Mike Schreiner says the Holland Marsh Highway is another example of Premier Doug Ford, under the guise of COVID, pushing through an environmentally destructive agenda.

Feds will assess Ford Government’s plans to pave over Ontario’s greenbelt

Schreiner says the highway would slice directly through the Greenbelt, damaging 17 hectares of the Holland Marsh and 9.5 hectares of provincially significant wetland. In addition, he says it would further threaten the health of the already at-risk Lake Simcoe and create additional 87-thousand tonnes of climate pollution per year.

Construction of the highway could begin this fall on the strength of an environmental assessment conducted in 1997.

Schreiner says Ontario needs smart development and transportation infrastructure that respects its natural heritage, not “more highways that destroy wetlands, farmland and greenspace pumping more toxic emissions into the air.”
