Georgian College in Barrie will be hosing the annual FIRST Robotics competition this weekend.
Secondary school robotics teams from across Ontario are set to take part in week two of this year’s competition. Six local teams are participating from Simcoe County, Grey County and Muskoka. Opening ceremonies will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Due to an expected capacity crowd, this event is not open to the public.
Teams are challenged with using the materials provided and a limited budget to build a specialized robot which will compete in the competition. Their robot will need to have the ability to complete a variety of tasks.

Each year the FIRST Robotics competition features a different challenge for teams of students to test their budding engineering skills. This year’s event is called INFINITE RECHARGE, which features a Star Wars theme in partnership with Lucasfilm.
Centred around the futuristic setting of FIRST City, two alliances made up of three teams each will use their droids to activate a shield generator to stop an incoming asteroid strike. To do so the droids must be built with the precision to throw balls into goals, manipulate a control panel and maneuver its way around the pit.
Points will be awarded for how well each team’s robot performs at each stage of competition and these will go towards their total score in 2020. The teams at the top of the leader board after week seven will compete in the championship in Houston, Texas.
Being a world wide competition, there are 3,898 teams participating from across 66 different regions; including the United States, Canada and China. Kick off was back at the beginning of January and the finals will be held at the end of April.
The event will be taking place all weekend at the Georgian College Athletics Centre. For more information and schedule, visit https://www.firstinspires.org/team-event-search/event?id=44114
