High-rise development proposed for Bradford Street is largest the city has ever seen

'A good sign for our city'

There has never been a development proposal for Barrie as big as this one.

Four buildings, 1,900 residential units, a 152-suite hotel and ground floor commercial space stretching between Bradford Street and Lakeshore Drive. The tallest of the buildings would tower 42-storeys above the waterfront.

It’s a joint venture between SmartCentres and Greenwin.

“What we’re seeing in terms of these proposals for Barrie is on another level,” says Mayor Jeff Lehman. “And coming out of a difficult time with COVID, I suppose it’s a very good sign for our city that investors want to go big in Barrie.”

Concerns have been raised about the scale of the project, the shadows it will cast and traffic.

City staff still need to give the plan a look through a critical eye.

A report for council is expected this fall.
