Highway 400 in the Barrie area was closed in both directions shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday for about three hours after Ontario Provincial Police officers responding to a report of a disabled vehicle identified the potential of a suspicious package containing explosive materials inside the car.

The vehicle was on Highway 400 northbound, south of Mapleview Drive in Barrie.

"To ensure the safety of the motoring public and surrounding community, Highway 400 northbound and southbound between Innisfil Beach Road and Mapleview Drive were closed," police said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

Numerous OPP units attended the scene including the critical incident commander, the explosives devices unit, canine unit, and mobile support unit.

No explosive materials were found in the vehicle.

The driver, a 42-year-old woman from Hanmer, north of Sudbury, was transported to hospital for medical assessment.

The highway reopened around 2:10 p.m.
