Barrie’s John Brassard among Erin O’Toole’s shadow cabinet

Barrie-Innisfil MP named as Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government.

The federal opposition has named its shadow cabinet and the list includes a local name.

Conservative leader Erin O’Toole released details of his shadow cabinet ahead of the 44th session of parliament, and among the names, Barrie-Innisfil’s John Brassard. The three-time Barrie-area MP has been named as the Shadow Minister for Ethics and Accountable Government.

“I am very excited to be asked to serve as Ethics and Accountable Government Shadow Minister,” Brassard said. “If the last six years are any indication, I expect to be extremely busy holding the Trudeau government to account on issues of ethics, conflicts of interest, accountability, lobbying, and privacy.”

Brassard previously served as the party’s Shadow Minister of Veterans’ Affairs and says he will continue to advocate on veterans’ behalf. “I have a deep and profound respect for those who served and continue to serve our country, and I will work with the new Shadow Minister of Veterans Affairs to make sure their issues and their voices are heard,” he said. “My office will always be there to help our veterans and their families.”

Shadow cabinet ministers have no executive power but are tasked with scrutinizing the policies and actions of the government. The official opposition’s shadow cabinet is designed to hold cabinet ministers to account.
