Julie Payette resigns following release of report indicating Governor-General oversaw toxic workplace environment

A dozen Rideau Hall staff and former employees accused the Gov.-Gen. of harassment

Governor-General Julie Payette is resigning following a workplace review indicated she and her secretary presided over a toxic work environment.

The review at Rideau Hall began in July of last year, after the Privy Council Office hired an independent consulting firm to review reports Payette was responsible for workplace harassment in her office. Reports suggest a dozen public servants and former employees came forward to say Payette belittled, berated, and publicly humiliated staff. Her secretary, Assunta di Lorenzo, was also accused of participating in the toxic environment and will also resign.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada Richard Wagner will serve as the acting Governor-General.
