Local alliance calling on Simcoe County leaders to ensure a sustainable and just recovery

Just Recovery Simcoe outlines three guiding principles

An open letter signed by dozens of local organizations is calling on the County of Simcoe and member municipalities to ensure a sustainable and just recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

The alliance of over 30 goes by the name Just Recovery Simcoe and is urging local leaders to implement a policy that promotes more resilient, equitable communities, better prepared to withstand future crises. Included in this alliance are housing and poverty advocates, labour groups, and local business owners. The letter sent to local governments hopes that three principals are followed during the region’s recovery: invest in people, invest in nature, and invest in communities. The letter, available online, provides recommendations on how to achieve this.

“Governments will need to make a big impact with future decisions because there will be less money to go around, but more people to help,” said Margaret Prophet of alliance member Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition. “We can look at best practices from around the world to ensure that however money gets spent, it efficiently increases community health, people’s livelihoods and well being.”

“The many “little miracles” our BFU members have been performing daily in the last three months have shown us all the compassion and resourcefulness of the people in our area, and the strength of our desire to be a strong, supportive, and resilient community,” said Nikki Glahn, Sarah Fleming, Neli Trevian, Alyssa Wright of the Facebook group Barrie Families Unite. “But we urge our government representatives to also remember those that were left behind for us to help, ensure that all of our residents are a part of our local recovery plan, and won’t get left behind again.”
