A Markham woman, who had just returned from Los Angeles, has become York Region’s first COVID-19 related death.
The 72-year-old woman flew to Toronto Saturday and was picked up by her son and daughter-in-law. York Region health officials say she collapsed shortly after arriving at her son’s home.
She had also recently travelled to France and Tahiti. It’s not clear where she contracted the virus nor how she passed enhanced screening at the airport.
“Sometimes individuals escape detection,” said Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region’s Medical Officer of Health. “I think the last modelling study that I saw from the London School of Hygiene seemed to suggest that about 42 percent of individuals who may be infectious tend to get through these screening measures.”
The woman’s son and daughter-in-law are in self-isolation.
