More than 200,000 Canadians may have inadvertently received CERB overpayments

Extra cash will have to be paid back

More than 200,000 Canadians are getting a note from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) about the extra CERB payments they received.

It wasn’t necessarily their fault, more due to confusion over how to get the payments. In some cases, people applied to two government agencies.

The bottom line is the extra payments will have to be paid back, though CRA is not in a hurry to get it back. While it recommends those who received the extra funds pay them back by the end of the year, it will not begin the debt collection process until the pandemic is over.

Some have already made repayments.
