Non-COVID vaccinations postponed as health unit preps to immunize youth

Youth vaccination approval coming sooner than anticipated

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is pushing pause on non-COVID immunization programs due to continued demands surrounding the pandemic.

In late September, the SMDHU announced plans to resume publicly-funded immunization services. At the time, it was believed that a COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 would not receive approval until early 2022.

However, approval of a youth COVID-19 vaccine is now anticipated as early as this month. Additionally, the province is expected to announce plans for booster shots for higher-risk populations.

As a result, the SMDHU is putting its efforts into the implementation of both these immunization initiatives when they’re announced. Any existing routine immunization appointments that have been confirmed will still be honoured.
