Off-duty York Regional Police Staff Sergeant killed in crash in Meaford

Craig Heatley was a 31-year veteran of YRP

A York Regional Police (YRP) service veteran has died in a motorcycle crash while off-duty.

YRP Chief Jim MacSween tweeted on Sunday that Staff Sergeant Craig Heatley and his wife were involved in a serious motorcycle crash in Meaford on Friday.

“Heatley succumbed to his injuries and his wife remains in serious but stable condition,” MacSween said in the tweet.

Grey Bruce OPP did not identify the victim of the crash, but a media release on Friday said officers responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 610 in Meaford. They said a driver was transported to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

“This is a devastating and unexpected loss for all of Craig’s family, friends and platoon mates. Craig was a well-respected 31-year York Regional Police veteran, who worked in Criminal Investigations, Academics, Auto Recovery and most recently in #4 District Uniform Patrol,” MacSween tweeted.

The cause of the collision is unknown.
