Officials say just hang up if someone claiming to be from Service Canada calls to demand money

Common phone scam resurfacing in South Simcoe Police Service's stomping grounds

The South Simcoe Police Service is sounding the alarm on a phone fraud that has surfaced in the area.

Police say residents are getting calls from scammers who claim to be police or Service Ontario representatives. The residents are threatened with jail time if they don’t follow the caller’s orders, which include buying gift cards or revealing personal details like social insurance numbers.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reminds you that you’re free to say no. If a caller tries to get you to buy something or send them money, even if they claim to be police, you can either request information in writing, or better yet, hang up.
