It was 16 years ago Wednesday that a power outage swept across Ontario and the northeastern U.S. The sudden blackout impacted an estimated 50 million people.
Disrupted traffic lights caused commuter chaos. Departures and arrivals at airports and subways were halted during the blackout that covered over 24,000 square kilometres.
Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corporation was blamed for the outage after a reported glitch that failed to alert them to a power failure. The report said the failure involved some overgrown trees and a power line that went to their generating plant in Cleveland.
