A 17-year-old girl has been killed, a second person injured, in a single-vehicle rollover Wednesday night on Georgian Drive near the main entrance to Georgian College.
The deceased was a passenger in the vehicle. The 17-year-old male driver was treated at hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The rollover happened just before 10 p.m. resulting in an hours-long closure of the roadway.
Police say a westbound motor vehicle lost control as it entered the curve in the road just west of the driveway to Georgian College. It left the roadway after mounting a snowbank on the north side of the road, struck a large directional road sign, rolled numerous times and came to rest in an open, snow-covered area between Georgian Drive and Highway 400.
Police spokesperson Peter Leon confirms the two were high school students in the area. “Both the driver and passenger are from the City of Barrie,” says Leon. “Unfortunately, with this being exam time and the kids are in the process of having a few days before the start of the second semester, a lot of people are waking up to some very sad and very unfortunate news.”
Names have not been released.
