OPP identify snowmobiler who went through the ice in Ramara as Orillia man

The body of a 35-year-old Orillia man has been recovered after he and another snowmobiler went through the ice near Ramara.

Around 4:30 Sunday morning, first responders were called to reports of voices screaming for help on Lake Simcoe in an area known as The Narrows in Ramara Township. Police, Ramara and Orillia Fire Services followed the sound of screaming to find one of two stranded men. He was rushed to Orillia hospital by county paramedics.

The search for the other sledder began then, with the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit and OPP helicopter called to aid in the search. The search was called off shortly before 5:00 Sunday evening after locating the man’s body.

Police have identified the deceased as James Tahir of Orillia. The other man remains in Orillia hospital.
