Orillia's annual curbside clothing and textile collection is running from June 2 to 6.
Last year, approximately six tonnes of clothing and textiles were collected in this event, for which the city partners with Recycling Rewards to put on at no additional cost.
Bags must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled clothing and textile collection day for that residence. All clothing and textile items must be clean, dry and in clear bags to be collected. There is no limit to the number of bags that can be set out, but it's asked that the bags not be heavier than 20 kilograms.
Clothing and textile collection days differ from regular waste collection days. The City of Orillia's website has a collection map viewable for residents to determine their collection day. The free Recycle Coach app also has the information for the event.
Reusable items collected in this effort are sold through retail thrift stores by Talize, with a portion of the revenues directly supporting Cornerstone to Recovery, a non-profit that provides community-based recovery programs for individuals and families impacted by addiction.
Acceptable items include:
- Clothing including belts, coats, and hats.
- Purses, backpacks, and luggage.
- Undergarments.
- Shoes, socks, and mittens.
- Linens including bedding, towels, pillows/cushions, and sewing fabric.
- Stuffed toys.
- Ripped, torn or unusable clothing and textiles will be collected and recycled.
