ORILLIA WATERFRONT DECORATED FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH “SELFIE CHRISTMAS CARDS”

News release – Orillia District Chamber of Commerce

Orillia and area residents can take a holiday selfie to share with friends and family while enjoying some fresh air at Couchiching Beach Park. Two “selfie Christmas card” backdrops, painted by local artist Paul Baxter, have been installed at the waterfront pavilion as part of the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce’s Light Up Orillia & Lake Country event.

The artwork was installed just in time for Christmas, and will remain in place over the holidays. “The idea is to provide an incentive for local residents to get out and enjoy some fresh air, while offering an opportunity to connect remotely with friends and family,” says Chamber Executive Director Allan Lafontaine. “With public health restrictions limiting gatherings again this holiday season, we’re hoping that the artwork will lift some spirits and that people will enjoy creating custom photo greetings they can share.”

As part of Light Up Orillia & Lake Country, artwork has also been installed at the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital, and near the Community Centre in Rama. Lights and décor have been placed throughout Orillia and Lake Country, including community spaces in Severn township and Orillia, and at local retirement homes. A light contest and tour are also part of the initiative, and will continue to run throughout the holidays. Information about how to download the tour and how to enter or vote in the contest can be found at orillia.com or on the Light Up Orillia Facebook page. Light Up Orillia & Lake Country is presented by the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce and Hydro One, with support from local sponsors Pizza Nova Orillia, Orillia Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, Kahuna Surf Shop, Sunshine Car Wash, Sunshine Carpet and Flooring, and Scottish Highlands Golf Course.
