Sigrid's Cafe and Fine Bakery is the kind of place that looks, smells and even sounds like a true European bakery. Their thick, rich, creamy, buttery, sweet, tart and savory baked goods line the coolers as you walk through the doors of Barrie's oldest German bakery. Bright, bold and punchy colours synonymous with European packaged goodies line the retail shelves. The icing on the cake is the greeting you receive once inside, Guten Tag (Good day in German).
If you're new to the city, Sigrid’s Cafe and Fine Bakery is a gem worth discovering. This is scratch baking at its finest. The downtown Bakery is owned and operated by the fourth generation of professionally trained, European bakers.

"Our recipes go back four generations when things were made with real ingredients."
Andrea Higgins
Brian and Andrea Higgins took over the bakery on July 1st, 2004. Andrea's parents Josef and Sigrid Krautgartner, first opened the bakery in November of 1983. "They left a very successful bakery in Germany in order to start a new life here," said Higgins. Andrea trained in Bundesfachschule Germany, Hannover and Wolfenbuettel.
Andrea and Brian's three children all help run the business now, with her youngest daughter Jessica an aspiring apprentice. Middle child Patrick is now working full time at the bakery and the eldest, Tim is the bakery's General Manager. "We have an incredible staff that have been with us for decades, don't be surprised if they greet you in German," says Andrea.
