This Saturday marks the 17th Barrie Dragon Boat Festival. This event has raised over $1.85 million for a number of local charities and organizations including the Barrie Public Library.
I was lucky enough to get a crack at paddling a dragon boat with a group of people and I can tell you first hand, it’s quite the workout. The whole team must be in sync and when you cross that finish line after 300 meters, your arms are really cooking. You’re very happy when the captain yells “let it ride”, which means to relax and stop paddling.
The festival begins with the ceremonial “Waking Of The Dragon”, there will be lots of food and refreshments, and of course, intense dragon boat races. Come out this Saturday starting at 8 AM and watch all the teams battle it out to see who will be the fastest.
