Police divers pull body from Minden-area lake after a canoe capsized

OPP say a lack of safety equipment was a significant factor that contributed to the tragedy

A tragic end to a canoe outing for a family of four in cottage country.

Haliburton Highlands OPP said emergency crews were called to Moore Lake Saturday afternoon about a canoe that capsized.

Police said boaters in the area arrived on the scene. A man sunk beneath the water after passing a young child to safety. A woman and another child were safely pulled from the water.

Police divers with the assistance of the Minden Hills fire department recovered the body of a 39-year-old North York man.

OPP said the lack of safety equipment was a significant contributing factor to the tragedy.
