Police investigating arsons along Orillia hiking trail after 16th burning tree reported

Numerous occurrences reported since fall of 2020

Police are probing a series of fires along a popular Orillia hiking trail, believing them to be intentionally set.

On Saturday, February 20, the OPP were called to a suspected arson involving a tree that was smoking but not fully engulfed. The tree was smouldering along Scout Valley, a hiking destination off Barrie Road in Orillia. The Orillia Fire Service reports this is the sixteenth similar occurrence reported since the fall of 2020. The tree had to be cut down to be extinguished and to make sure it would not spread.

It is believed these fires were intentionally set by someone. If anyone has any information about these crimes, they’re asked to contact the Orillia OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS should anonymity be desired.
