The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues its investigation into a Manitoulin Island shooting that claimed the life of an OPP officer and a civilian.

Police confirmed the loss of Constable Marc Hovingh on Thursday afternoon, after he and another officer responded to a report of an unwanted man on property in the area of Gore Bay. The SIU on Friday confirmed Constable Hovingh and the other officer located the 60-year-old male in a trailer on the property and an interaction ensued.

At around 11 a.m. Thursday, there was an exchange of gunfire between Constable Hovingh and the man, according to the SIU, in which both were struck. Both men were taken to hospital and succumbed to their respective injuries. The second officer was not injured.
