Private funeral for OPP Constable Marc Hovingh is on Saturday

The Special Investigations Unit says Hovingh and another man died after an exchange of gunfire

Premier Doug Ford will attend the funeral of OPP Constable Marc Hovingh on Saturday.

The officer will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Manitoulin Secondary School in M’Chigeeng at 1 p.m.

In a release, the premier’s office noted that due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance at the funeral service is strictly limited and by invitation only.

Hovingh grew up in Barrie and attended Timothy Christian School. His family moved from Barrie before he completed high school.

The 52-year-old was one of the officers who responded to a call on Thursday, Nov. 19 regarding an “unwanted man” on a property in Gore Bay, on Manitoulin Island.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, Hovingh and a civilian died after an exchange of gunfire.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by the Ontario Provincial Police Association for Hovingh’s wife and four children.
