Radio Broadcasting turns 100 years old: Canada Post commemorates with stamp

First wireless broadcast in Ottawa on May 20, 1920

It forever changed the way Canadians experienced news and entertainment, at home and away. Radio is celebrating 100 years today. Canada Post is marking the anniversary with a stamp that showcases early 20th-century radio broadcasting equipment and receiving devices.

The first wireless broadcast was on May 20, 1920, in Ottawa. A performance by soprano Dorothy Lutton was broadcast live on XWA (Experimental Wireless Apparatus) which the first station in Canada to receive an experimental radio license. Later that same year XWA had the first official rebranding to call letters to CFCF, for Canada’s First, Canada’s Finest.

Within two years 34 radio stations were operating across Canada, and by the end of the decade, Canadians were tuning in on more than 300,000 radios.

Booklets of 10 Permanent domestic-rate stamps (five of each design) are available, along with an Official First Day Cover.
