Rally expected at Meridian Place Saturday, calling for national paid sick day policy

Organizers ask participants wear masks and keep to a safe physical distance

A rally is expected in Barrie Saturday, calling for more paid sick days for Canadian workers.

The rally at Meridian Place is one of many expected in a national movement organized by the group 15andfairness.org, and spearheaded locally by Michael Speers. “Canada is one of the very few countries in the world that don’t have a national policy mandating paid sick leave,” Speers told Barrie 360 over the phone. “This means that fewer than half of Canadians are covered by employer sick leave.”

“We’re demanding 21 paid sick days for all workers. That would be seven paid days plus 14 days if you have to self isolate,” added Speers.

Saturday’s day of action begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday; participants are encouraged to carry signage and leave messages on the pavement in chalk, but do so at a safe physical distance. The organizers of the event request that masks be worn.
