Renaming ceremony honours slain South Simcoe Police Constable

Lefroy is where Const. Russell grew up and played hockey

What’s in a name?

Plenty.

The South Innisfil Arena (Lefroy) is now the Morgan Russell Memorial Arena and Community Centre.

On Sunday evening, the arena was renamed in memory of the slain South Simcoe Police officer who was gunned down last October. Russell grew up in Lefroy and played hockey in the community.

Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin stated, “We are all still grieving the loss of two valued members of our police service, and it’s only fitting to honour Constable Russell this way, as he grew up playing hockey in this arena.”

The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is working with the family of Constable Devon Northrup, who was also slain the same night as Russell, to rename a municipal asset in his honour.

The renaming ceremony coincided with the Lefroy Minor Hockey Association’s annual “Fill the Barn” event.
