A court in China has sentenced a Canadian to death in a global methamphetamine operation.
The Canadian, identified as Fan Wei, had been convicted with 10 others on charges of producing and selling dozens of kilograms of the illegal drug in 2012. Only one other received the death penalty.
In January, Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was sentenced to death in a retrial of a drug-smuggling case.
Canada/China relations have been strained since the arrest of a Huawei executive last year in Vancouver.
Schellenberg’s retrial was seen as retaliation, as were the detention of two Canadians over national security allegations. Some Canadian exports have also been delayed.
Canada has accused Beijing of arbitrarily applying the death penalty.
