SIU clears Barrie Police after early July injury in squad car back seat

Man fractured own hand punching partition, SIU says

The Barrie Police Service has been given the all-clear by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after a young man got hurt after finding himself in the back of a cruiser.

The SIU has ended its probe into injuries sustained just before noon on July 2nd. Police were summoned to a local home with reports of a domestic incident. A 24-year-old man was cuffed and put in the back of the squad car.

The SIU report says the man managed to get his handcuffed hands from behind his back to the front and punched the partition separating the driver’s seat.

A trip to the hospital after that revealed a fracture in the hand, but the SIU says police cannot be held responsible for the injury.
