A group looking to change the lives of women and girls in the community is putting out a call for new members.
Soroptimist International is a service organization with chapters in more than 120 countries, with Barrie being one of the newest.
Interim President of Simcoe County chapter Janet Lehmann says their mission is to improve the lives of women and girls which leads to social and economic empowerment.
The unique things about having our own club in Barrie, Lehmann says, is that we can choose what causes and issues are relevant on the local level.
To be chartered the group needs 12 members and the sky is the limit after that, Lehmann adds. “The more members we have the more resources there are to help women and girls.”
Currently there are 10 members and Lehmann says she is excited for that number grow. “There is a comradery and friendship in this group, with the purpose and mission of helping other women. It’s very special.”
Being a member is completely volunteer. You can be involved as much as you are willing and able to.
The group helps our local women and girls but is also beneficial to its members. Lehmann says,” My own doubts and introversion’s are addressed by the kindness in the groups.” After all; Soroptimist means “Best for Women.”
The groups next meeting is November 20th at Chartwell Barrington Retirement Residence at 450 Yonge Street in Barrie at 5:45. Information about the groups will be readily available.
