South Simcoe Police Chief issues statement in light of George Floyd protests

"Every day we must strive for equality and unity."

Andrew Fletcher, Chief of the South Simcoe Police Service, has issued the following statement:

The events of the past week have been incredibly disturbing and it’s a challenge to find the right way to respond, but silence is not an option. We cannot tolerate racism, discrimination, violence or hatred of any kind.

The pain and anger in the Black Community due to racism is historic and ongoing, and although we cannot change the past, this is an opportunity to listen, to learn and to do better.

In policing we are held to the highest of standards. Our Core Values include Acceptance, Respect, Inclusion and Accountability. But especially at this time we need to live those values and demonstrate through our compassion and leadership that we want and need to move beyond the hatred that we are seeing in society today.

We are so fortunate to have the support of the communities we serve, but we take nothing for granted. Every day we must strive for equality and unity. Wherever your journey to acceptance and unity starts – it must never stop. We can make a positive difference in the lives of others if we park our biases and embrace each other. We support you and we hear you in solidarity.
