Explore the Arboretum

Nestled in the northwest corner of Sunnidale Park, the Wyman Jacques Arboretum is a serene haven for nature enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

Established in 1974 by the Barrie Horticultural Society, this 12-acre botanical collection showcases a diverse array of trees, shrubs, and gardens. Each plant is thoughtfully labeled, making it an educational experience for those interested in botany or simply looking to enjoy a peaceful walk.

Beyond its diverse tree species, the Arboretum features several specialized areas:

  • Lilac Dell: A fragrant collection that blooms vibrantly in spring.
  • Butterfly Bushes: Attracting a myriad of pollinators, adding life and color.
  • Evergreen Beds: Providing year-round greenery and structure.
  • Rose Gardens: Bursting with color and aroma during blooming seasons.

These gardens not only enhance the park's beauty but also support local biodiversity.

Interactive learning with the Tree Walk

For those eager to learn more, the Arboretum offers an interactive, self-guided tree walk. Accessible via QR codes throughout the park, visitors can embark on a journey to identify various native tree species and understand their roles in the ecosystem. This initiative fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment and educates the public on the importance of urban forestry.

Gardens with heart

The arboretum isn’t the only draw for nature lovers. Sunnidale Park is home to several beautiful and meaningful gardens:

  • Heroes Garden – A tribute to pandemic heroes, with serene paths and seating areas.
  • Pollinator Garden – Supporting local ecosystems with pesticide-free blooms.
  • Tranquility Garden – A peaceful space designed by Master Gardener Peggy Staite-Wong, who also helped shape the park’s Arboretum.

Walking trails for all levels

Sunnidale offers a variety of trails, from easy paved paths to wooded routes.

The 1.3-mile trail is great for a brisk walk, while the 2.1 km loop is a favorite for dog owners and nature lovers alike. Both trails offer beautiful scenery, benches to rest, and lots of spots for that perfect Instagram shot.

Off-leash dog park

If you’ve got a four-legged friend, Sunnidale Park is a must-visit. The off-leash dog park spans over 7 acres of rolling terrain, giving dogs plenty of room to run, play, and explore.

The area features footpaths, bridges, benches, and even shaded spots to help both dogs and owners stay comfortable.

Safety is a top priority here. The park is double-gated and fully fenced, offering peace of mind while your pup roams free. Whether you have a high-energy breed or a laid-back senior dog, the varied landscape provides stimulation and adventure.

It's also a great place to meet other dog owners and socialize your pet.

With its mix of open spaces and wooded areas, the Sunnidale off-leash park is one of the best spots in Barrie for a dog-friendly day out.
