Wasaga Beach off-limits to visitors in wake of unsanctioned car rally

OPP set up spot checks on roads leading into the town

Ontario Provincial Police posted spot checks at entrances to Wasaga Beach on Saturday and turned away non-residents.

Police said this was in response to large crowds at an unsanctioned car rally which broke COVID-19 gathering rules.

Sgt. Jason Folz said officers were checking ID’s and turning people away if they did not live in the town.

Folz said police were out with non-lethal guns to contain the gatherings.

Additional officers were brought in from outside police agencies to deal with the crowds. The town installed bumps in various parking lots to deter drivers.

The rally featured vintage and modified cars and attracted hundreds of people to Wasaga Beach.

Police said many tickets were issued for stunt driving and other traffic violations.
