"When it comes to cutting your own hair, I recommend holding off"

We are about a week-and-a-half in to COVID-19 social distancing, and with no concrete end in sight some people are starting to worry about the state of their appearance - namely, their hair.

What do you do if you were in need of a trim before the age of social distancing set in? You might feel tempted to give yourself a little trim, but the professionals say don't give in to the impulse.

I'd recommend holding out if you can. Bangs...I understand...but the rest of your hair? No one's gonna see you.

Blair Mabley

Local hair stylist Blair Mabley, of Hair by Blair in Oro Medonte, says she doesn't recommend taking matters in to your own hands. Taking the scissors to your own tresses might actually cause more damage than good, according to Mabley. Depending on how much of a mess you make, it will mean more work for your stylist when social distancing protocol is over and you are eventually back in their chair.

The same goes for hair colour. If your roots start to show, don't resort to boxed dye from the drug store, says Mabley. That will definitely make the situation worse. If you're feeling really desperate, she suggests getting in touch with your stylist and see if they can get you some professional colour to touch up your roots on your own.

So what can you do in the meantime? Blair says brushing your hair often will go a long way to improving texture and shine, and decreasing how often you wash your hair will prolong the life of your colour.

According to Blair, many of her clients and friends have been reaching out with concerns about their hair. While for most it is a minor worry, she understands that during this stressful and overwhelming time, how you look on the outside can often have an effect on how you feel on the inside. But don't get out those clippers just yet - we're all in the same boat, Mabley says - nobody else is getting hair cuts or colour touch ups right now either. Unless you're like her husband, and happen to be self-isolating with your stylist.
