YMCA Looking to Former Barrie Central Land

Y Announces New Community "Hub" to Be Built On Former School Lands

A downtown Barrie Y is closer to reality.

The YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka announced at its annual gala it has secured space at the former Barrie Collegiate site for a new facility there.

“By being in such a prominent location in our downtown, the Y will be a gathering place for our community. Being in this location is where the Y’s impact is going to be particularly well felt,” said Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman.

The new Y will serve as a hub housing traditional programs along with other services from community partners like Youth Haven and RVH. The existing Grove St. facility will remain in operation for up to four years before being phased out.

“We have listened to our community stakeholders and we are confident that this is the Y that Barrie needs today and for generations to come. We are building a ‘hub’ in our downtown core – a true centre of community,” said Andrew Lorriman, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Board Chair.

Proceeds from the sale of the Grove St. YMCA are helping to cover the costs of the new facility.
