We recognize that black people have played a significant role in shaping Canadian heritage and identity throughout history and continue to show resilience and great determination in working towards a more inclusive and diverse Canada.

The City of Barrie celebrates Black History Month with events that bring awareness to the significant contributions that Black Canadians have and continue to make to the cultural, economic, and social landscape of our country and our community.

Programming at Barrie Public Library
Learn about Black History 365 days of the year! Celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous nation it is today. In collaboration with community partners, UPlift Black.
This year, the library will also be hosting a Celebration with Local Author Tricia Khan on February 8. During the event, Tricia will read from her books and lead crafts and activities for children.
Virtual Lectures with Simcoe County Museum
Every year, the Simcoe County Museum hosts a virtual lecture series featuring guest speakers and local historians.
This year's lecturers are:
- January 31: Alinka Angelova a distinguished writer, director, producer, and entrepreneur from Barrie, Ontario. She will be speaking about her latest production, The Lost Heroes of Oro.
- February 6: Laura LaChappelle talks about her journey growing up as a mixed race in Simcoe County.
- February 20: Peter Meyler tells the story of Richard Pierpoint, an African freedom fighter and one of Canada's first settlers to answer questions and challenge assumptions about Ontario's history.
