Earlier this year, Serena McGovern, Children’s Services Librarian at the Barrie Public Library (BPL), was named the Children and Youth Librarian of the Year by the Ontario Public Library Association. This prestigious award acknowledges Serena's outstanding contribution to children and youth services in the community, along with her commitment to enhancing the work environment for her colleagues.
Mayor Alex Nuttall expressed his appreciation, stating, “This award of recognition is a strong testament to the dedication of our local librarians in nurturing young minds, solidifying the Barrie Public Library and their Children’s Services as an invaluable resource for our community.” He continues, "We are proud to support their efforts in inspiring the future generations of Barrie and send sincere congratulations to Serena and her team."
Having been an integral part of BPL since 2012, Serena McGovern's commitment to engaging families, staying attuned to community needs, and promoting early literacy can been seen in all the programs she plans across the library system.
Throughout her 11-year tenure, Serena spearheaded the library's outreach program and has proactively adapted programs to be more inclusive and accessible. It's because of Serena that each storytime at BPL begins with an acknowledgment of different abilities, as well as a conversation inviting modifications based on how participants feel that day.
Her efforts also extend beyond the library's confines, with strong advocacy for the well-being of children in the community.
In addition to her work within the library, Serena is a strong advocate for the well-being of children in the community. She has also forged valuable partnerships with organizations such as the City of Barrie, YMCA Simcoe Muskoka, Early ON, Barrie Police Service, and Barrie Native Friendship Centre. These partnerships further enhance the library's role as a community hub, offering diverse and meaningful programs.
Lauren Jessop, CEO of Barrie Public Library, commended Serena's continuous efforts to enhance library offerings. Lauren highlighted Serena as the biggest champion of her colleagues and a supportive coach to the program planning team. “Receiving this award is a testament to her accomplishments. We’re very proud of her,” Lauren emphasized.
By honoring Serena McGovern with the Children and Youth Librarian of the Year award this month, the Ontario Public Library Association not only acknowledges her individual achievements but also shines a spotlight on the vital role public libraries play in nurturing the intellectual and emotional growth of the community's youth.
Serena's story is a testament to the impact one dedicated librarian can have, leaving an enduring legacy within the Barrie Public Library and the hearts of the community she serves.
