What is Juneteenth and why is it important?

Celebrate Juneteenth

Juneteenth is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a powerful reminder of freedom withheld — and a celebration of freedom won.

Recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, Juneteenth marks a turning point in American history. But why exactly is it celebrated on June 19th? And what makes it so important today?

The history behind Juneteenth

Although President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, not all enslaved people were freed immediately.

In places still under Confederate control, it took time to free the enslaved. This included the westernmost Confederate state – Texas.

Two and a half years later, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved African Americans were now free.

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”

Gordon Granger, Union General, June 19, 1865

That day became known as Juneteenth, blending the words “June” and “nineteenth.”

This moment marked the end of slavery in the United States – at least in practice – and became a key date in African American history.

Why Juneteenth matters

Juneteenth isn’t just about looking back. It’s about acknowledging the past while continuing to push for equality, justice, and recognition.

Here’s why the holiday is significant:

  • It commemorates freedom: Not just legal freedom, but the hard-fought battle for it.
  • It highlights Black history and culture: Juneteenth events often include music, food, storytelling, and art that celebrate African American heritage.
  • It starts important conversations: About racism, progress, and the ongoing fight for equity.
  • It connects communities: Across North America, June 19th brings people together to reflect and learn.

How the day is celebrated

Across the U.S. (and even in parts of Canada), Juneteenth is marked by festivals, parades, and community events. Some people host family gatherings or cookouts. Others attend educational panels or cultural performances.

You might see:

  • Red foods and drinks (a tradition linked to resilience and African heritage)
  • Live music and dance
  • Storytelling and oral history
  • Guest speakers and community leaders
  • Local Black-owned business showcases

More recently, companies and schools have started recognizing Juneteenth with days off, DEI events, or volunteer opportunities.

Is Juneteenth celebrated in Canada?

While Juneteenth is an American holiday, Canadians (especially those with ties to the U.S.) do take part in the celebration.

In Canada, Emancipation Day is observed on August 1st, marking the end of slavery in the British Empire in 1834.

Still, some Canadian cities with strong Black communities host events on June 19th to honour African American history and connect it to our own journey toward equality.

As awareness grows, so does the importance of listening, learning, and showing up. Whether you attend a local event, support Black creators and businesses, or simply take time to reflect, Juneteenth is a reminder that freedom should never be delayed.
